The Southern Charm of Gardenias: A Timeless Favorite for North Florida & South Georgia

There’s just something about a gardenia in bloom. The glossy evergreen foliage, creamy white flowers, and unforgettable fragrance instantly make you think of Southern summers, front porches, and warm evenings in the garden. Here in North Florida and South Georgia, gardenias thrive when given the right conditions, rewarding gardeners with beautiful blooms and year-round structure in the landscape.

Whether you’re planting a classic hedge, adding fragrance near an entryway, or looking for a unique specimen plant, there’s a gardenia variety for nearly every space.

Why Gardenias Perform So Well in Our Area

Gardenias love the warm, humid climate we experience across the Tallahassee region and South Georgia. They perform best in morning sun with afternoon shade, especially during our hottest summer months. Rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter is key, and gardenias prefer slightly acidic soil conditions.

One of the biggest mistakes gardeners make is planting gardenias in heavy, poorly drained soil or in areas that stay too wet after rain. Raised beds or amended planting areas can make a huge difference in long-term success.

Common Gardenia Varieties

August Beauty

One of the most popular gardenias in the South, August Beauty is loved for its large, velvety white double blooms, rich fragrance, and reliable summer flowering. Growing to approximately 5′ tall by 3′ wide, this elegant variety works beautifully as a hedge, foundation planting, or standout specimen shrub. Its highly fragrant blooms are also a favorite for wedding bouquets or as floating petals in decorative bowls for an elegant centerpiece.

Frost Proof

A favorite for our area thanks to its improved cold tolerance, Frost Proof produces fragrant white blooms while handling occasional winter cold snaps better than many traditional varieties. Growing to approximately 5′ tall by 4′ wide, this direct sun tolerant gardenia is an excellent choice for foundation plantings and mixed landscapes. Its flower buds are especially resistant to damage from late spring frosts, helping ensure reliable blooms season after season.

Dwarf Radicans

This dwarf, evergreen gardenia is perfect for borders, walkways, containers, and small garden spaces. Growing approximately 12″ tall by 24″ wide, Radicans forms a low, spreading habit that works beautifully as a low border, ground cover, or container plant. Though compact in size, it still produces plenty of fragrant white blooms and glossy evergreen foliage.

ScentAmazing

ScentAmazing from Southern Living is a compact reblooming gardenia prized for its fragrant single white blooms and long flowering season. Growing approximately 2.5′ to 3′ tall by 3′ wide, this evergreen variety is an excellent choice for containers, hanging baskets, borders, and smaller landscape spaces.

Jubilation

Jubilation from Southern Living is a compact, evergreen gardenia known for its fragrant white blooms, glossy foliage, and tidy growth habit. Reaching approximately 3′ to 4′ tall by 3′ to 4′ wide, it’s an excellent choice for foundation plantings, borders, and smaller landscape spaces where a neat, polished look is desired.

Diamond Spire

Diamond Spire from Southern Living is a unique columnar gardenia featuring fragrant white blooms and glossy evergreen foliage in a narrow, upright form. Growing approximately 3′ to 4′ tall by just 2′ wide, it’s an excellent choice for narrow spaces, entryways, containers, or precise landscape designs where height is desired without taking up much room.

Planting Tips for Success

When planting gardenias, dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper. It’s important that the top of the root ball sits slightly above surrounding soil level to improve drainage. Incorporating organic matter such as Michigan peat and Bio-Tone can help create the loose, acidic soil gardenias prefer.

Mulching is especially important for gardenias in our climate. A layer of pine straw or natural mulch helps regulate soil temperature, retain moisture, and maintain acidity around the roots.

Water deeply after planting and keep the soil consistently moist while plants establish, especially during the first summer.

Feeding & Care

Gardenias are fairly heavy feeders and benefit from regular fertilization during the growing season. We recommend using an acid-loving plant fertilizer such as Espoma Holly-tone or 13-6-6 fertilizer several times throughout spring and summer to encourage deep green foliage and abundant blooms.

Yellowing leaves are one of the most common concerns with gardenias and are often tied to either poor drainage, improper soil pH, or nutrient deficiencies. Consistent moisture, proper feeding, and avoiding overly wet soil usually solve most issues.

Pruning is minimal for most varieties. If shaping is needed, do it shortly after flowering so you don’t accidentally remove next season’s buds.

Keeping Gardenias Looking Their Best

The secret to beautiful gardenias comes down to three things:

  • Good drainage
  • Consistent moisture
  • Proper feeding

Avoid letting plants completely dry out during hot weather, but also avoid soggy conditions. Morning sun and afternoon shade will help blooms last longer and keep foliage looking fresh through the summer heat.

With their timeless beauty and unmistakable fragrance, gardenias continue to be one of the South’s most beloved landscape plants, and for good reason. Whether you’re adding a single statement plant or designing an entire fragrant garden border, these classic bloomers bring elegance and charm to any landscape.
