From Runoff to Refined: A Drainage & Landscape Transformation

The Problem:

The house is situated uphill from the roadway and drainage easements. In any storm event, water runoff follows the grade of the yard and collects in low areas, with some water
settling for long periods eroding plant beds and other parts of the yard. Existing beds lost shape.

The Plan:

Retain the soil that is heavily sloped. Collect and direct stormwater to the street. Eliminate water pooling in plant beds and low spots. Create a cleaner look for plant beds.

The Solution:

By installing three retaining walls, several areas of the yard are alleviated of water erosion. Behind one wall, a French Drain collects and directs sheet flow towards the street and
away from landscape beds. Each wall encloses a different bed, creating interesting focal points throughout the landscape design. The earth around these walls is regraded and sloped appropriately to redefine the hill and reshape beds.
