From Erosion to a Fresh Start: Restoring a Water-Damaged Landscape

A beautiful lawn starts with what’s happening beneath the surface. For this recent landscaping project, years of water runoff and erosion had left the property needing more than just new grass. Before we could create a healthy new lawn, we first had to correct the problems causing the damage.

The Challenge: Water, Erosion & a Struggling Lawn

One of the biggest challenges with this property was managing water. Runoff from both the street and driveway flowed across the yard as it made its way toward the lake. Over time, that moving water carved deep ravines through the lawn, washing away soil and making it increasingly difficult for healthy turf to become established.

The existing lawn had also become heavily overrun with weeds, leaving very little desirable turf remaining.

Adding to the challenge were several large oak trees killed by lightning strikes. Although the trees were gone, their large stumps remained and needed to be removed before the landscape could be properly repaired and graded.

Simply installing new sod wouldn’t solve these problems. Without addressing the drainage, grading and soil conditions first, the same erosion would eventually begin damaging the new lawn.

Starting From the Ground Up

Our Outdoor Solutions team began by essentially giving the property a clean slate.

The remaining oak stumps were removed, and the existing lawn and weeds were treated and completely removed. With the old turf out of the way, we could begin rebuilding the landscape properly.

A major part of that process was creating a better system for controlling the water entering the property. Along the end of the driveway, perpendicular to the road, we added an asphalt berm to help redirect runoff around the driveway instead of allowing it to flow freely across the property. We also installed concrete curbing along the side of the driveway to further direct water away from the driveway and toward the new drainage system.

To collect and move that water safely through the property, we installed two catch basins and connected them to underground piping that carries the water toward the lake. A channel drain was also installed directly across the driveway to capture additional runoff before it could contribute to erosion in the lawn.

With those drainage improvements in place, we turned our attention to correcting the grade. New topsoil was brought in and carefully graded to reshape the property and create a smoother, more controlled path for water to travel through the landscape. Instead of allowing runoff to concentrate in areas where it could carve through the lawn, the combination of the new grading and drainage system helps collect, redirect and move water toward the lake while reducing its ability to cause damaging erosion.

Once the grading was complete, we installed a new irrigation system to provide consistent, efficient watering for the future lawn. With the drainage corrected, the property properly graded and irrigation in place, everything was ready for the installation of the new sod.

A Fresh Zoysia Lawn

With the drainage issues addressed, the soil prepared and irrigation in place, the property was finally ready for its transformation.

Fresh Zoysia sod was installed throughout the newly graded lawn, immediately replacing the patchy, weed-filled landscape with a clean, uniform surface.

The difference is dramatic, but the most important improvements aren’t just what you can see. Beneath that new Zoysia is a landscape that has been rebuilt to better manage water, support healthy turf and help protect the property from future erosion.

Outdoor Solutions That Address the Real Problem

Projects like this are a great example of why successful landscaping is about more than making a yard look better. Sometimes you have to identify and correct the underlying problems before you can create a landscape that’s built to last.

From stump removal and lawn renovation to irrigation, grading, drainage and new sod installation, our Landscape team can help transform even severely damaged properties into beautiful, functional outdoor spaces.
