From Backyard Swamp to Dry, Usable Lawn
A Drainage Solution That Keeps Water Moving
After every heavy rain, this homeowner found themselves dealing with the same frustrating problem—standing water, soggy grass, and a backyard that stayed wet long after the storm had passed. What should have been a place to relax and enjoy became difficult to use, and the constant moisture made maintaining a healthy lawn nearly impossible. Here’s how we transformed a waterlogged yard into a properly draining landscape that looks great and performs even better.
The Problem
Every time it rained, the backyard would turn into a swamp. Water would collect in several low spots before running down the side of the house toward the street, leaving large areas of standing water. The constant flooding made it difficult for grass to survive, kept the yard from being usable, and created an ongoing drainage headache for the homeowner.
The Plan
To solve the problem, we designed a complete drainage system that would capture water before it had a chance to pool. We planned to install a series of catch basins throughout the backyard and along the side of the home, tie all of the home’s downspouts into the new drainage system, and direct everything safely to the street. We also regraded the front, side, and backyard to encourage proper water flow, installed fresh sod throughout the disturbed areas, and added a decorative dry stream bed along the side of the home to help guide runoff while enhancing the landscape.
The Solution
Today, rainwater is collected before it has a chance to flood the yard. The catch basins throughout the backyard and side yard work together to move water through an underground PVC drainage system that carries it directly to the street. Each downspout is tied into the system, and the water exits through a professionally core-drilled outlet at the curb. The new dry stream bed adds another layer of protection by slowing and directing surface runoff while creating an attractive landscape feature. Finally, the freshly graded yard and new sod not only restore the property’s appearance but also ensure water continues to drain properly for years to come.
The Results
What was once a backyard plagued by standing water is now a functional, attractive outdoor space that can be enjoyed year-round. By combining proper grading, strategically placed catch basins, underground drainage, and fresh landscaping, we eliminated the flooding while improving the overall look of the property.
