From Failing Driveway to Functional Outdoor Living

Sometimes the biggest problems start where you can’t see them. That’s exactly what was happening at this home.

The Challenge

For years, rainwater had nowhere to go. The back of the home had no gutters, so every storm sent water pouring off the roof while runoff from the street and driveway flowed downhill toward the house. All of that water collected against a limestone-based stacked stone retaining wall at the end of the driveway.

Over time, the constant moisture washed away the limestone base supporting both the wall and the driveway. As the foundation eroded, voids formed beneath the concrete, causing sections of the driveway to begin failing. Water also seeped through the stacked stone wall, creating uneven, washed-out areas throughout the yard.

Our Solution

To stop the damage at its source, we first removed sections of the existing stacked stone retaining wall and reinforced the failing driveway by pouring concrete beneath it to restore a solid foundation.

Next, we designed and installed a complete drainage system to capture water before it could cause additional erosion. New gutters were added to the back of the home, and downspouts, French drains, and channel drains were all connected into a single underground drainage network that safely redirects water around the home and into the backyard for proper dispersion.

With the drainage issues permanently addressed, we rebuilt the retaining wall using durable tumbled retaining wall blocks, added a beautiful new paver sidewalk and patio to improve access and outdoor living space, regraded the yard for positive drainage, and finished the project with fresh sod.

The Result

What was once a failing driveway and erosion problem is now a structurally sound, attractive outdoor space built to last. The reinforced driveway is protected by a new retaining wall, the integrated drainage system keeps water moving away from critical areas, and the new patio, sidewalk, and freshly sodded lawn have completely transformed both the function and appearance of the backyard.
